Fox news reporter lashes out on interview

Reporters and journalists are supposed to be objective. I was told that no matter how passionate you are about a subject, a reporter should not be subjective, but instead maintain objectivity.

"You are the devil!" "You're going to hell!"
Should Fox news have run this in the first place?

  1. Well, of course, that is quite entertaining. Is it journalism? It's certainly television, which all too often revels in heat rather than light. And it's easy to dismiss it because it's Fox, whose news operation I don't much admire, though some facets of it are better than others. However, even though I would not describe that degree of aggressive interviewing as journalism - my judgment doesn't mean it's not -- it does draw out the depth of feeling on the part of the church spokesperson. In other, more circumspect interviews, might she manage to maintain a facade of decency and humanity? Don't know. Don't know if this degree of provocation provided fresh insights. I'd say a 'journalist' - and the interviewer seems more chat host than journalist - loses far more than she gains by being so intemperate, including credibility in future interviews. But some truth emerged from this, did it not?

  2. I would say that the point of the report seems to be lost in the end, and, therefore, I would not call this particular instance news. It turns into more of an argument between the reporter and this woman. I also wonder as to whether the team brought the guest on specifically to stage this debate, and, furthermore, whether the rest of the Fox news encouraging the reporter to act out in the way that she did. I don't particularly trust Fox News, but I suppose that I should give them the benefit of the doubt in thinking they would purposely try to create something that seems more like Jerry Springer than a true news program...
